Your main valve is usually where the water line enters the house or near the street meter. Turn it clockwise until it stops. That kills the water to the whole home and stops a burst pipe from flooding another room.
After you shut the main, open a faucet on the lowest floor or outside. This drains the pressure left in the pipes so less water pours out of the break while you wait.
